Kamehameha Schools Lands

Kahuina’s Lamakū and Māmalu Towers are built on land owned by Kamehameha Schools, an organization dedicated to caring for the ‘āina (land) and restoring cultural and natural resources rooted in traditional Hawaiian values. Kamehameha Schools prioritize the creation of thriving communities, like Kahuina, and respect for the unique cultural and historical contexts of its lands.

In keeping with this philosophy, Kamehameha Schools and Kahuina honor the original Hawaiian place name of the ‘āina (Kaʻākaukukui) and the area’s history as a center of healing and renewal in old Hawaiʻi. Original place names have mana (spiritual power) and reflect Hawaiʻi’s deep cultural heritage. Kamehameha Schools bestowed Kahuina’s towers with the names “Lamakū” (guiding star) and “Māmalu” (Princess Victoria Kamāmalu) in homage to Kaʻakaukukui as a place where Princess Kamāmalu worked to better the lives of the Hawaiian people; its more recent history as a center of commerce; and its current day significance as a place of growth moving steadily toward a bright and prosperous future.

Our Kaka‘ako will gain additional HHFDC, workforce and market-priced housing, retail areas, open spaces, broad sidewalks and public art.
